THE AGE OF ANTICHRIST

“The entire life and work of Antichrist can be summarized into three periods:

1. FIRST PERIOD of Antichrist – between his birthday and the moment of its revelation – will go unacknowledged. St. John of Damascus says that “Antichrist is grown in the hide and will unexpectedly uprise.”

2. THE SECOND PERIOD of Antichrist opens with his entry to the world as a teacher of the world or “prophet”. He is likely to start his work in the circumstances of world war when humanity, after suffering all abominations, will not see any way out of the disastrous deadend, because all means of resolution will be in the hands of a secret sociey that will cooperate with the Antichrist. He will offer a plan for successfully solving the global crisis, based on political and social wisdom – namely the establishment of a single political and social structure across the world.

Weary of the horrors of war and spiritually blind, mankind will not recognize this as being a cunning trap and thus will be lured into the most ruthless and unending bondage. On the contrary, people will greet with high praises the manifestion of wisdom and genius of the Antichrist.

Global reputation of Antichrist as a genius thinker, new ruler and savior of all people will pierce like the lightning among all nations, in the shortest time. “The evil spirits spread through the air will influence people to unanimously think highly and very passionately about the Antichrist with a stuborn attraction to him” – says St. Ephrem the Syrian.

During this time, Antichrist will not use any force, but will aim to gain the trust and love of people through deception and a hypocritical and theatrical appearance of virtue. He – says Vladimir Solovyov – “will throw the veil of good and truth shining over the mystery of iniquity.” St. Ephrem says it will come in such a way as to deceive them all. It will seem humble, gentle, a hater of – as he will say about himself – the lawlessness, despising idols, giving preference to piety, good, loving the poor, overly handsome, steadfast, helpful and accomodating to all and highly valuing the Hebrew nation, because Jews will expect his coming. He will employ cunning means to please everyone, so people get quickly to love him. He will not receive bribe, will not speak with anger, will not look somber, but with a decent appearance will begin the deceit of the world, until he is enthroned.

The rich experience of the great ascetics of Orthodoxy tells us that when a dark spirit cannot defeat the one that engages in a spiritual battle, then a more powerful dark spirit comes in the guise of “angel of light “(2 Corinthians 11:14). This “angel of light” forces to instill into the ascetic confidence and spiritual leaning towards this manifestation of light, thus luring him to doom. For this reason, we can imagine how easy and quickly the brilliant image of the Antichrist will arouse and attract general sympathy.

As a result of this deception , the society will perceive “a need, a desire for Antichrist and will resonate with the voice calling for a genius of geniuses to lead the development and material prosperity at the highest level and bring such earthly welfare, to an extent that the heavens will appear superfluous to man “- St. Ignatius.

During this time, the hypocrisy of Antichrist will go so far that he will not only show tolerance towards Christianity, but also show concern to preserve it. From outside, he will try to imitate Christ. On account of lack of Church’s spiritual guidance, and rather through the worldly wisdom, the vast majority of Christians will not resist this deceit and will consider the Antichrist as Christ at His second coming.

The monks of the Solovetsky Monastery sent a reply which St. Zosima onforwarded to his spiritual son who asked how to recognize the Antichrist when he comes. Holy monk gave the precise response: “When you hear that Christ came and appeared on earth, then you know that that’s the Antichrist.” And continued: “Mankind will not recognize the Antichrist, it will count as Christ, will proclaim him as Christ … but there will be no need nor possibility for people to go and tell each other about coming (the second) of the Son of God. He will come without warning. He comes in His almighty power to all people and the whole world at the same time “-St Ignatius.

Saviour himself warned: “Then someone will say: Here, the Messiah is here or there, do not believe him … So they will say to you: He is here in the wilderness, do not go out there. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man “(Matthew 24, 23-27).

In order to deceive the people, the Antichrist will show many bewildering signs. St. Paul says: “His coming is the work of Satan, with all sorts of powers and signs and lying wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2, 9). And St. Cyril of Jerusalem adds: “Being ‘father of lies’(John 8, 44), he will deceive imagination by deceptive works, so that people will believe they see the dead resurrected, the lame walking and the blind seeing, whilst no healing occurred. ”

The whole pedestal of the Antichrist – his wisdom and genius fame, lying wonders and his entire deceitful life – they have one goal: to take over the ruler of the whole world, of all nations. Gaining popularity among the Jews will be the first step on this path. Antichrist will do all that is possible for the Jews to recognize him as the promised Messiah. Will manage to complete the Hebrew and government organization will take to perform the age-old dream of the Jews – the restoration of the temple of Solomon. After that “people will be forced to be proclaimed king, and the crowd will love the Jews, he will rebuild Jerusalem and the temple will rise” (Synaxis of the Sunday Farewell to meat – called the awful judgment).

TWO PROPHETS

Notwithstanding, Antichrist’s efforts to be reckoned as the true Messiah will face unexpected opposition through two prophets of the Old Covenant. Two prophets who through the will of God were taken to heaven without tasting the death, will come to earth before the end of the world in order to accomplish the work and to suffer death. The names of these saints are prophets Enoch and Elijah. The Lord will send them to Jerusalim to give people in those days one last great warning against deception that surrounds them. They will condemn without hindrance Antichrist’s deception for three years and a half, how long the second period of Antichrist will last, when prepaparation will be made to seize world power. Unable to spoil his appearance of gentleness and goodwill, the Antichrist won’t be able to stop them or take any harsh measures against the prophets.

People will try in vain to allegorically interpret this wonderful coming of the Holy Prophets, Enoch and Elijah. Holy Scripture and Tradition of the Church speak precisely about both their real arrival on earth, seven years before the end of the world, and their resurrection and ascention to heaven.

In the book of Revelation is written: “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if someone wants to hurt them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies, and if someone wants to hurt them, so should be killed. They have the power to shut the sky, so that rain stops durin the days of their prophecy, and will have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to punish the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. And if they finish their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them “(Revelation 11, 3-7).

In the book of the prophet Malachi, one of the witnesses is called: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord” (3, 23).

Fathers Ephrem (in his speech about the end of the coming Antichrist) and John of Damascus (in the word about Antichrist) clearly teach that those “two witnesses” (Rev. 11.3) to come before the end of the world, are the holy prophets, Elijah and Enoch.

Tradition of the Holy Orthodox Church, expressed in our church books, also speaks of literal understanding of prophecy in the Scripture on the revelation of Elijah and Enoch before the end of the world, giving no reason, whatsoever, to an allegorical understanding. Synaxis, read during the meat fare Sunday, says “Seven years before (the end of the world), as prophesied in Daniel, Enoch and Elijah will come preaching to the world to not receive him (the Antichrist). Antichrist will torture and cut their heads”(cf. Triodion). Again, in the service of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Stichera from “Lord, I have cried “, we sing “Elijah Tishbite, you will not see death until you preach to all the end” and in the troparion, Elijah is called “second forerunner of the coming of Christ”.

Also, in Minei we read: “St. Elijah, the prophet of God, was taken with his body in a chariot of fire and is living up now guarded by God in heaven. He was seen in the body by the three Apostles in the time of the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor, and again will be seen in the flesh by the men who before the Second Coming of the Lord on earth. In that time, the one who once escaped the sword of Jezebel, will suffer the sword of Antichrist, not only as prophet but as a martyr, and will be found worthy of greater glory by God”. The “Prologue” of the same day says: “Elijah will come along with Enoch before the Second Coming of Christ to judge the endless iniquity of the Antichrist and invigorate the piety of believers”.

However, despite all these warnings, most people, because of the flesh and the bodily contemplation, not only will fail to grasp the full deception of the Antichrist’s manifestation, but will surround him with their praise and exaltation. St. Ephrem says that when peoples and tribes of the earth shall see so great virtues and powers of the Antichrist, all will join together in one conscience as to proclaim him as ruler, saying to one another: “Can anyone find any other man so good and right?”

Antichrist will impress the world so deeply with his well thought behaviour – showing himself everywhere as the divine emissary, the true Messiah – that Hebrew people before others will proclaim as their ruler, despising all warnings of the holy prophets Elijah and Enoch.

3. THE THIRD PERIOD will begin through taking in his own hands the whole world power. A state of overwhelming devastation of the nations of the earth, because of a great World War, will help greatly to this. Most will see global governance under the Antichrist as the only possible way to avoid new wars and a time to bring humanity a peaceful and thriving age.

Word of God portrays the image next coming of Antichrist to world power: on earth, shaken and devastated by war, “ten kings shall arise” (Daniel 7, 24). Seven of them will be of one mind with the Antichrist and will obey all power and authority. The other three will try to keep their independence, but Antichrist will defeat them through the power of weapons (Daniel 7, 8, 20, 24).

After the victory of the Antichrist over the three kings, by removing the only obstacle in the path to complete ruling, the book of Revelation portrays him as the face of a red beast with “ten horns” (i.e. the ten kingdoms subject to him) “and seven heads” (i.e., the seven rulers who have voluntarily submitted to and acting as plenipotentiary representatives of the powers that is) – cf. Revelation 13, 1 and interpretations to this verse of the Holy Irenaeus of Lyons and Cyril of Jerusalem.

As for the global power of the Antichrist, the book of Revelation says that ” it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations” (13, 7). “And his dominion will gradually see an increase in power – but not by his own power” (Daniel 8, 24). Antichrist will receive dominion and power of Satan, “the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority” (Revelation 13, 2). Only the continual co-work of Satan will explain the unusual success of the Antichrist so quick to seize dominion over the world, and his unprecedented power, which no human effort will be able to stand up or to any put barrier.

“Antichrist – says Beliaev – will work with power and miracles of Satan, that power will be very high … through powerful means… faster means of communication and coordination methods will enable a revolution around the world at the same time.”

Public recognition of the Antichrist as the leader of the world will occur in the same years as his general recognition as spiritual leader of all religions. Vladimir Solovyov, in the work titled “Story of the Antichrist – three dialogues”, expressed the view that the Antichrist, after gaining power, will call for an ecumenical gathering of all religions. At this synod (in Jerusalem), the Antichrist will be offered to unite all into one community, under the guidance of one spiritual guide. He will direct particular attention to Christians of all denominations, promising them all sorts of incentives in return for protection and recognition of his rule. St. Ephrem writes: “He will trumpet himself as his forerunners have done that before long you imagined, will call himself a preacher, who settled again and teaching the true knowledge of God. Those who do not understand Christianity, they see him as a representative, a supporter of the true religion and will join. He will speak loudly about himself, calling out to be the promised Messiah and children of worldly wisdom and the wisdom to flesh will praise him. Seeing his ability overwhelming, glory, power, genial qualities, they would proclaim God and they shall be his followers and his helpers. ”

Among other things, it is of great significance to mention that all the Fathers consider that the chief cause of rapid enslavement of mankind by Antichrist is attributed to the lack of spiritual understanding and constant focus on worldly pursuits. Since spiritual understanding can be acquired and can increase only by leading a spiritual life by the truly Orthodox Christians (so without embracing here those who are Orthodox in name only), only those few of them will remain true Orthodox Christians until the end by leading a spiritual life according to the preaching of the Holy Church, will have the fullness of the means of defense at that time and will be able to unravel all traps of the Antichrist.

With unimaginable prowess, this deceptive ruler will replace worship of the God-man Jesus Christ through worship of himself, man-god Antichrist. In Scripture he is depicted as one who “opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or honor to worship” (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2, 3-4) as Saying blasphemies as well as one who blasphemes God and “His tabernacle, and those who live in heaven” (Revelation 13.5 to 6).

According to the prophecy of St. Paul, Antichrist will sit “in the temple of God, showing himself as God” (2 Thessalonians 2, 4).

No doubt that “Antichrist will not be able to sit in the temple continuously. He will only do it during feasts and important occasions, for instance, on the proclamation of the ruler of the world and God of all. However, this sign will be fulfilled even if he will sit in the temple just once. More than that, he will command that his portrait be displayed in all Christian and non-Christian temples, and for all people to worship him as they would worship the image of God. Finally, the church will begin serving Antichrist as God. ”

St. John the Theologian says that the Antichrist will perform great signs “that and fire to come down from heaven to earth before men” (Revelation 13, 13). Saint Ignatius Briancinainov says: “This sign is revealed in Scripture as being the largest of miracles of Antichrist – and place the sign will be in the air. It will be a stunning and frightening view that will work especially on sense of sight, casting spells and throwing it in deceit.” Miracles of Antichrist, worked through the power of Satan, will produce an irresistible influence on viewers. “People will not understand that his miracles have no good rational purpose, they are full of lying daze without sense, theatrical devilry performances, causing consternation to bring the mind into confusion and forgetfulness, to deceive, cheat and charm the world through excitement caused by spectacular appearances, however all in vain “- St. Ignatius.

Once they have seen these “miracles”, people, because of their spiritual blindness and the victory of flesh over spirit, will immediately identify this demonstration of satanic power with the greatest manifestation of God’s power and, under ecstasy, they will receive the Antichrist as god. “Antichrist will frighten people through his frightening and astounding miracles. Through them, he will satisfy the curiosity of reckless and blatant ignorance, superstition and prejudice will meet in bewilderment human knowledge. All men led by the light of their fallen nature and thus alienated from God’s guiding light, will be lured into submission by the deceiver (cf. Revelation 13, 8) ‘, St. Ignatius Briancianinov.

The word of God reveals on several occasions Satan’s power over the kingdom of earth. Lord himself calls the Devil “the ruler of this world.” St. John the Theologian writes in the book of Revelation that Satan gives his servant “power and his throne and great authority” (Revelation 13, 2).

Satan’s power is enhanced and strengthened by deception, deceit and violence. Jesus Christ’s power was through consensual obedience to God the Father. What Christ rejected – in the time of temptation in the wilderness – the Antichrist will receive and fulfill. The cunning Antichrist will receive all his power from Satan in exchange of perfect obedience to him. He will reward others with the same devilish power, according to the measure of their obedience and service of Satan.

In one of his speeches, the God-inspired, St. Ephrem the Syrian gave us wisdom as follows: “With pain I’ll start sobbing word and I will speak about the end of this world and the shameless and cruel serpent that will bring the world to a great turmoil and fear, cowardice and unbelief in people’s hearts. He will work miracles, signs and frightening views as to deceive, for it were possible, even the elect (Matthew 24, 24), will be deceived by lying signs and wonders worked by himself. For the permission of the Holy God will get the power to deceive the world, because lawlessness will cover the earth and abominations will be commited everywhere. Therefore, because of the people sins, the immaculate Lord will allow the world to be tempted by the spirit of lie, since people wanted to separate from God and to love evil.

O, brethren, terrible striggle will be in those days, especially for believers, when signs and wonders will manifest through great powers of the snake itself, as it will show itself in terrifying visions of God as well – will fly through the air and all the demons, like the angels, will ascend to the tyrant. For he will roar with power, changing appearance and scaring all the people beyond measure. Brothers, who will then turn out to be attentive, firm, bearing in his soul the sign of faithful – holy coming of the begotten Son, our God – when he will look at the unutterable pain to come from everywhere on every soul and that will not be any hint of relief, no relief of any kind, neither on land nor sea? Who will remain steadfast upon seeing the world in disorder with people running to hide in the mountains and some starving, others melting of thirst like wax and having no mercy when he sees all the faces weeping and asking with burning desire: “Can anyone find anywhere on earth God’s word?” and heaing the answer: “Nowhere!”

Who will suffer unbearable pain to see the gathering nations coming from the ends of the earth to see the tyrant, many of them worshiping him, shouting: “You are our savior!”? The seas will rise, the earth will dry, the heavens will not give rain, plants will wither and all the people from East will flee to the West, because of the great fear, and those who live in the west will run to the east in disorder. But the one without shame, then taking control, will send devils to all lands to preach, “the emperor has appeared with great glory. Come, to see him. ”

And who will have a steadfast soul so as to suffer all these temptations? Who, really, is this man, as I said before, so all angels can glorify him? ”

Once he will acquire world power, the Antichrist will suddenly change his behaviour. His hypocritical and caring attitude towards people and false benevolence towards his enemies will all turn to fierce persecution of all faithful Christians who refuse to worship him as a god.

He will “oppress the saints of the Most High and will plan to change the feasts and the law” (Daniel 7, 25, Revelation 12, 13-17, 13, 6-7). The community’s devine service – Divine Liturgy – should cease. Antichrist and his followers, write Beliaev, “will destroy the books of Holy Scripture, will follow and they shall persecute the preachers of God’s word, and those who take part in Christian church services. They will try and prevent stop the Eucharist. However, preaching the word of God will not be silenced, and divine services will not stop and will celebrate the Eucharist “, but only in hidden places, as in the first centuries of Christianity.

The first killings Antichrist will commit on his accusers – holy prophets Enoch and Elijah. “And if they finish their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified [Jerusalem]. And the people, the tribes of languages and nations will look at their dead bodies half past three days, and will not allow them to be placed in the tomb. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and be glad, and shall send gifts one to another, because these two prophets tormented them that dwell on the earth. And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered in them and stood on their feet, and great fear fell upon them who could see them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up here! And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. And in that hour was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell, and perished in the earthquake seven thousand people, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven “(Rev. 11, 7-13).

CONVERSION OF THE JEWS

Following the proclamation of these two holy prophets, and of resurrection of their wonderful ascent to heaven, an important event will occur. A large number of Hebrew will be converted to Christ. Blessed Theophylact of Bulgaria writes about it like this: “Elijah’s coming as a forerunner of the Second Coming and will bring them to faith in Christ, all Jews will prove obedient, guiding them, as it were towards their parental inheritance of those who had fallen on him. ” This is based on the following prophecy:

I. “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord, and he shall turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to
their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse “(Malachi 3:23).
II. “In that day the remnant of Judah and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer lean on the one who hit them, but shall lean, in faith, on God. A remnant of Jacob will return to the mighty God “(Isaiah 10, 20-21).
III. “And Isaiah cries for Israel: The number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved” (Romans 9, 27; cf. Isaiah 10:22).
IV. “I will pour upon the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall gaze towards me whom they have pierced, and they will make a complaint on him, as do a son begotten and mourn him as the firstborn. In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadad-Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo “(Zechariah 12, 10-11).
V. “If you [nation converted] have been cut naturally in the wild olive tree and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, the more strongly they [the Jews will convert], which are by nature, will be grafted into their own olive tree. Because I would not, brethren, that you do not know this mystery, lest you yourself reckoned wise, the hardness became Israel in part, until you get all of the Gentiles “(Romans 11, 24-25) .

Conversion of the Jews to Christ will stir up fierce Antichrist’s hatred against Christians. Then they will be made to suffer “great tribulation, which from the beginning of the world until now, neither shall be” (Matthew 24, 15-21), for “it was given to it [the beast] to make war with the saints and to overcome them “(Revelation 13: 7).

Salvation of a small number of believers will depend only on the brevity of the Antichrist’s reign. “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened ” (Matthew 24, 22).

Antichrist world ruler will last three and half years. ” From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the “1,335 days ” (Daniel 12:11; cf. 12, 7). It also gave time for the government of the Antichrist in Revelation, “and gave them dominion to work for forty-two months” (13:5)
.
Absolutely no human power will be able to stand against the Antichrist. Only the Lord Himself, coming the second, will defeat him. Then will come the awful judgment of Christ and the end of the world (Matthew 24, 30-31, 25, 31-46, Rev. 1, 7, 20, 11-15, 21, 1-8). “And the beast was slain, and with it the false prophet, who does miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. Vineyards were both thrown into the lake of fire burning brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of the horse rider “(Rev. 19, 20-21).” And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and will work day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).

Revelation of St. John the Theologian, and the prophecies of Daniel and the Apostle Paul reveal to the world that the son of perdition will not only be a political leader and prophet of a new religion but will be posing as God incarnate that was promised by the prophets of old Jews. Victory of Judaism will be great, as it will be commanded to keep the Sabbath from Hebrew and Jewish law. Numerous sects, like sheep without a shepherd, will gather around the Antichrist as around their pastor, in the rebuilt temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Here, the self-proclaimed “Christ” will receive divine worship, sitting on the throne of David. However, the most holy of Christians will be closed and instead will be placed an idol of Antichrist – a living statue, speaking. It was called by the prophet Daniel “abomination of desolation”. From that time the bloodless sacrifice of the Eucharist will cease on earth (Daniel 9, 27, 11, 31).

Reading the Book of Revelation (10, 1-7), we see an angel shouting loudly in Christian lands, at those who have apostatized from the true Church of Christ. Angel reminds everyone of the creation and He Who built them all, made flesh and dwelt among us, whose glory was seen, the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father – Son who came down to earth, that from the very fullness of His all to partake of grace (John 1, 14-16). But at that time, people will be fallen from grace and will ignore the sacraments, and willingly will be attracted to so-called signs of Christ, the false prophets

When the holy sacrifice ceases in the Church on earth, when, the Second Coming of the Lord will come unabated. Lord Himself, in His Holy Gospel urges us to be diligently: ” And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through “(Luke 12.39-40). Truly, no one at that time would suspect that the world is coming to an end, or will not think the time the Son of man cometh – so mankind will be taken completely unexpectedly. Calamities caused by the two envoys of God will be stopped and these prophets who had shown the sins of mankind, will be removed from the earth to heaven (Revelation 11.12) – they are Elijah and Enoch, those who had rebuke the Antichrist worshipers, warning those who are rejoicing their fate under the control of the son of perdition.

When progress reaches its peak, the fight against the various diseases and ailments will reach a level so advanced that it will seem that death itself will be defeated soon. Then, without warning, “vials of the wrath of God” (Revelation 16:1) will be poured out upon the worshipers of the Antichrist: sores and wounds will make suffer those who bear the mark of the beast, and the waters of the earth will become blood ( Revelation 16.3 to 7). Where will there be then the great doctors and scientists? Where are the prophets of materialism? One will not find any help neither in progress nor in books, nor in medicine.

The end of the Antichrist and his worshipers will be terrible. We read in the Book of Revelation that during the great day of God, Satan and Antichrist, along with their helper will send demons to call on all the kings of the world together for a great battle (Revelation 16, 12 to 14.16). When this great army will be gathered at Armageddon, the seventh plague of God shall be poured out upon the earth: a huge swoop of lightning and the sound of thunder and an earthquake of unimaginable proportions – a shock so great that islands shall perish, and the mountains shall be made to the ground (Rev. 16, 17-21). In an instant, all human pride will be shattered and will dissipate – all major industrial centers, cultural, artistic and educational, all things which man worshiped instead of God. ”
