Just a note to go with the Teilhard article \u2014 I think it was Sarah who sent it to us, but maybe it was you; in any case you might as well keep it in your \u201cevolution\u201d file. It is well done but, of course, \u201cunpublishable,\u201d as she says. Most people will just stop listening when they hear \u201cfraud,\u201d \u201cconspiracy,\u201d or anything like that. If you mention \u201cfraud\u201d in connection with Teilhard de Ch. it should be no more than a hint. Likewise Vatican II should be mentioned as little as possible in the \u201cChristian evolution\u201d section, as there are those who will leap at the opportunity to believe that you are of a \u201cpre-Vatican II\u201d mentality.<\/p>\n
I suspect also that Sarah is overestimating Teilhard\u2019s direct influence on the \u201cNew Christianity.\u201d That phrase was coined (I think) by St. Simon 150 years ago, and much preparation was made for it before Teilhard. Probably T. appeared at just the right time to take advantage of the modernist current and make everyone start to think of it in connection with his name.<\/p>\n
There are some good points for the \u201cChristian philosophy\u201d section on pp. 39-41.<\/p>\n
Concerning your chapter on \u201cEarly Man\u201d \u2014 very good! We will send it back shortly with a few comments. This is most of the \u201cscientific\u201d raw material you will need to support your conclusions on the \u201cscientific\u201d side of evolution. Only \u2014 where is the \u201cfluorine dating system\u201d? Isn\u2019t that in fashion now?<\/p>\n
This whole \u201cbook\u201d on evolution seems to be piecing itself together very well \u2014 and its doubtless better this way than it would have been starting from a pre-conceived plan. Frankly, we had never even thought of some of the theological aspects which we have been uncovering now.<\/p>\n
It would be good to have a quote from Charles Lyell or someone else from the period when the \u201cimmense antiquity\u201d of man and the earth first \u201cdawned\u201d on men, to show precisely why they started thinking that way.<\/p>\n
