The perverted Christian understanding could not be more prevalent today than is in what the Pope just said. He speaks of “Christian roots of Europe”, but does not tell you Western Europe has lost touch with true Chriatianity in 1054 when it separated from Orthodoxy and adopted a new doctrine soon after (Pope Gregory VII (r. 1073-1085) initiates a new conception of the Church and the role of the papacy within it.
