Here is what Mr Putin has just said, as published on\u00a0the Kremlin’s website:<\/p>\n

“I\u00a0have always liked communist and\u00a0socialist ideas. If we consider the\u00a0Code of\u00a0the\u00a0Builder of\u00a0Communism<\/strong> that was widely published in\u00a0the\u00a0Soviet Union, it strongly resembles the\u00a0Bible. This is not a\u00a0joke; it was actually an\u00a0excerpt from the\u00a0Bible. It spoke of\u00a0good things: equality, fraternity, happiness<\/strong>. However, the\u00a0practical implementation of\u00a0these ideals in\u00a0this country had little in\u00a0common with what the\u00a0utopian socialists Saint-Simon or\u00a0Owen spoke about. This country had little resemblance to\u00a0their Sun City.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Why make such a statement, why stir up so many hard feelings of so many? This was said in a meeting of Russian Popular Front, not under pressure from journalists or anything like that. What would be the reason to continue to link the future of Russia to its past? It makes no sense. There is literally nothing more left to say, nothing more left to add … than perhaps this last statement:\u00a0if Communism would not had tried to de-spiritualize man, but in fact try to exploit his spirituality, maybe the result would had been different …<\/p>\n

Of course, repentance can always occur, but for a public figure the process is that much more complicated. A public figure is not only responsible for himself but for all those who believed and followed him – are all those millions and millions\u00a0of\u00a0souls going understand what repentance is?\u00a0Orthodoxy teaches that if someone manages to help save at least one soul will save himself too. What if one dragged a\u00a0single soul (not to say many) into the darkness, what happens then?<\/p>\n
